Wet fly

Soft Hackle

Also called Soft Hackle

Short answer

The Soft Hackle is a wet fly that imitates emerging caddis and mayflies. It is usually tied in sizes 12 to 18. Fish it spring through autumn, and especially during caddis emergences and the hour before a hatch begins. Cast down and across, let it swing across the current on a tight line, and hold on.

Sparse and elegant. Imitates emergers/soft-bodied insects.

The North Country soft hackles are among the oldest surviving fly patterns in the English-speaking world, and the Partridge and Orange is the most enduring of them. It is a body of orange silk and a single turn of gray partridge hackle. Nothing else. It should have been superseded a century ago and it has not been.

The reason is the hackle. Partridge fibres are soft, mottled and long, and in current they collapse and pulse around the body constantly. That movement suggests legs, gills, an emerging wing, a struggling insect — the whole impression of something alive and vulnerable in the water column, without committing to any specific insect.

It is fished on the swing, which is a technique many modern anglers have quietly abandoned in favor of indicator nymphing. That is a shame, because a team of soft hackles swung through a riffle during a caddis emergence is not just effective — it is one of the most pleasant ways to fish a river, and the takes are unmistakable.

What does a Soft Hackle imitate?

Emerging caddis and mayflies.

How do you fish a Soft Hackle?

Cast down and across, let it swing across the current on a tight line, and hold on. Do not strike — the fish hooks itself against the swing. Fish two or three on a team for more water coverage.

When should you fish a Soft Hackle?

Spring through autumn, and especially during caddis emergences and the hour before a hatch begins.

What are the quick tips for fishing it?

  • Do not set the hook. Let the fish take against the tension.
  • Fish a team of two or three at different depths.
  • Orange, yellow and green silk covers most emergences.

How is a Soft Hackle tied?

  • Hook: standard wet fly, #12-#18
  • Body: orange silk thread
  • Thorax: hare's ear dubbing, sparse
  • Hackle: gray partridge, one or two turns

Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
