Nymph
Lightning Bug
Short answer
The Lightning Bug is an attractor nymph that imitates small mayfly nymphs, with heavy attractor flash. It is usually tied in sizes 14 to 18. Fish it spring through autumn, particularly in off-colored or high water and in low light.
Nymph Beginner #14-#18
Flashy beadhead, imitates mayflies. Great in off-colored water.
Printed on the King of spades
The Lightning Bug is built around flash. A pearl or silver tinsel body, a wire rib and a bright bead give it more reflectivity than almost any other small nymph, while the overall shape stays convincingly mayfly-like. It is an attractor that has not given up on imitation.
That balance is what makes it useful. A fly that is purely flashy gets refused by educated fish; a fly that is purely imitative can go unnoticed in colored or fast water. The Lightning Bug sits between the two, which is why it works in the conditions that defeat both.
It comes into its own after rain, during spring runoff, and in the low light at either end of the day. In clear, flat, heavily pressured water it is usually the wrong choice.
What does a Lightning Bug imitate?
Small mayfly nymphs, with heavy attractor flash.
How do you fish a Lightning Bug?
Dead drift deep under an indicator or in a Euro-nymph rig. Very effective as the lead fly with a drabber nymph trailing behind it.
When should you fish a Lightning Bug?
Spring through autumn, particularly in off-colored or high water and in low light.
What are the quick tips for fishing it?
- Pair it as the attractor ahead of something natural — the flash pulls fish, the second fly gets eaten.
- Pearl is the standard; try chartreuse in muddy water.
- Lose confidence in it on clear flat water. That is the right instinct.
How is a Lightning Bug tied?
- Hook: standard nymph, #14-#18
- Bead: gold or silver tungsten
- Tail: pheasant tail fibres
- Body: pearl tinsel, wire ribbed
- Wingcase: pearl flash
- Thorax: peacock herl
Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
