Dry fly

Trico

Short answer

The Trico is a dry fly that imitates tiny Tricorythodes mayflies, dun and spinner. It is usually tied in sizes 20 to 26. Fish it late summer and early autumn mornings, typically from soon after dawn until mid-morning. Fish to individual rising fish on 6X or 7X.

Tiny mayfly for summer hatches. Demands precision.

Printed on the 4 of hearts

Tricos hatch in extraordinary numbers on late summer mornings, mate in clouds above the water, and fall spent onto the surface in a carpet. The result is one of the most reliable and most difficult forms of dry fly fishing there is: dozens of visibly feeding trout, eating steadily, in a food supply so dense that your single artificial is competing with thousands of naturals.

The flies themselves are tiny — #22 to #26 is normal — with black bodies and pale wings. At that size, tippet diameter and drift quality matter more than pattern. Most Trico failures are drag failures that the angler cannot see.

The compensation is timing. The spinner fall happens at roughly the same time every morning through the hatch, often within a half hour, so once you have worked out the schedule on your river you can arrive, fish the peak, and be finished by mid-morning.

What does a Trico imitate?

Tiny Tricorythodes mayflies, dun and spinner.

How do you fish a Trico?

Fish to individual rising fish on 6X or 7X. Cast slightly downstream with a reach so the fly arrives before the leader. Accept that you will refuse more than you hook.

When should you fish a Trico?

Late summer and early autumn mornings, typically from soon after dawn until mid-morning.

What are the quick tips for fishing it?

  • Note the time of the spinner fall — it repeats within a half hour daily.
  • Fish to one specific fish and learn its rhythm rather than covering water.
  • If you cannot see the fly, watch for a rise in its neighborhood and set gently.

How is a Trico tied?

  • Hook: standard dry fly, #20-#26
  • Tail: white Microfibbets, long
  • Body: black thread or fine dubbing
  • Wing: white poly yarn, tied spent

Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
