Midge
Snow Cone Midge
Short answer
The Snow Cone Midge is a chironomid that imitates chironomid pupae hanging in the water column. It is usually tied in sizes 12 to 16. Fish it spring through autumn on lakes and ponds, with the heaviest chironomid activity in late spring and early summer.
Midge Intermediate #12-#16
White bead imitates gas bubble. Excellent lake pattern.
Printed on the 9 of spades
Chironomids are the single most important food source in most trout lakes, and the pupa is the stage that matters. It hangs almost motionless in the water column, slowly rising, and trout patrol specific depth bands intercepting them by the hundred.
The white bead is doing precise imitative work rather than adding flash. As a chironomid pupa prepares to emerge, gas collects under the skin at the thorax and shows as a distinct pale, glassy bubble at the head. A white or pearl bead is a remarkably good copy of it, and on hard-fished lakes the difference between a white bead and a gold one can be dramatic.
This is a fly that demands discipline rather than skill. It is fished static, at a measured depth, for long periods. Anglers who cannot resist retrieving it catch very little.
What does a Snow Cone Midge imitate?
Chironomid pupae hanging in the water column.
How do you fish a Snow Cone Midge?
Suspend it under an indicator at a measured depth, typically within a foot or two of the bottom, and leave it alone. Let the wind provide any movement.
When should you fish a Snow Cone Midge?
Spring through autumn on lakes and ponds, with the heaviest chironomid activity in late spring and early summer.
What are the quick tips for fishing it?
- Do not retrieve. The natural barely moves.
- Depth is everything — adjust in one-foot increments until you find the band.
- Black and red bodies with a white bead cover most lakes.
How is a Snow Cone Midge tied?
- Hook: curved nymph or buzzer hook, #12-#16
- Bead: white or pearl
- Body: black, red or olive thread, wire ribbed
- Thorax: peacock or dark dubbing
Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
