Dry fly
Rusty Spinner
Short answer
The Rusty Spinner is a spinner that imitates spent mayfly spinners lying flat on the surface. It is usually tied in sizes 16 to 20. Fish it evenings through the mayfly season, typically the last hour before dark. Also early morning after a heavy overnight fall.
Dry fly Advanced #16-#20
Imitates spent mayflies (often rusty-brown after mating); deadly during spinner falls.

A mayfly's last act is to mate above the water and fall onto it, wings splayed flat, and die. This happens most evenings through the hatch season, usually in the last hour of light, and it produces some of the most consistent and least crowded fishing of the day. Most anglers have gone to dinner by then.
Spinners lie absolutely flush and absolutely still. There is no wing upright, no hackle, no movement — just a thin rusty body and two transparent wings splayed sideways in the film. That is why hackled patterns fail during a spinner fall and why the imitation is so minimal: anything more is wrong.
The hard part is seeing it. A spent spinner is invisible at any real distance in fading light, and the rises are the softest of the day — a small dimple with no sound. Fish close, fish to specific rises, and accept that you will be setting the hook on faith more than once.
What does a Rusty Spinner imitate?
Spent mayfly spinners lying flat on the surface.
How do you fish a Rusty Spinner?
Dead drift, no exceptions. Fish to individual rise rings in the last light. Because you often cannot see the fly, set gently on any rise within a foot of where you think it is.
When should you fish a Rusty Spinner?
Evenings through the mayfly season, typically the last hour before dark. Also early morning after a heavy overnight fall.
What are the quick tips for fishing it?
- Rusty brown covers a remarkable share of spinner falls.
- Grease the leader to within six inches of the fly and leave the fly ungreased.
- The rises are dimples, not splashes. Slow your hookset down.
How is a Rusty Spinner tied?
- Hook: standard dry fly, #14-#22
- Thread: rusty brown 8/0
- Tail: split Microfibbets, long
- Body: rusty brown dubbing, very sparse
- Wing: white or clear poly yarn, tied spent and flat
Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
