Dry fly

Green Drake

Short answer

The Green Drake is a dry fly that imitates large green drake mayflies. It is usually tied in sizes 10 to 14. Fish it late spring and early summer, in a short window that varies significantly by river and elevation.

Large mayfly. Famous hatch in American West.

Green Drakes are the heavyweight mayfly of North American rivers — a big, olive-bodied insect with tall, prominent wings that is impossible to mistake for anything else on the water. When they come off, fish that spend the rest of the year eating #20 midges will move a long way to take one.

The hatch is short, localised and famously unreliable, which is exactly why it has a reputation. On a good year, in the right week, on the right river, it produces the largest trout of the season on a dry fly. On a bad year it is over before you hear about it.

Because the insect is so large, fish get a good look, and drake refusals are common and maddening. Long leaders, a genuinely drag-free drift, and a fly that sits low rather than perching on hackle points all help. Many anglers do better on a drake emerger than on the dun.

What does a Green Drake imitate?

Large green drake mayflies.

How do you fish a Green Drake?

Dead drift to individual working fish rather than covering water. Long leader, fine tippet for the size of fly, and absolute attention to drag.

When should you fish a Green Drake?

Late spring and early summer, in a short window that varies significantly by river and elevation.

What are the quick tips for fishing it?

  • Carry an emerger as well as the dun — refusals are common.
  • Fish it to specific rises, not to the water.
  • Ask locally about timing. The window is narrow.

How is a Green Drake tied?

  • Hook: 2XL dry fly, #10-#14
  • Tail: moose body hair
  • Body: olive dubbing with dark ribbing
  • Wing: dark elk or deer hair, or a parachute post
  • Hackle: grizzly dyed olive

Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
