Nymph

Frenchie

Short answer

The Frenchie is an euro-nymph that imitates mayfly nymphs with a bright hot spot. It is usually tied in sizes 14 to 18. Fish it year round. Particularly effective in faster or slightly stained water, and during baetis activity in spring and autumn.

Pheasant tail variant; slim profile, hot spot collar.

Printed on the 4 of diamonds

The Frenchie is a Pheasant Tail nymph with the thorax replaced by a band of bright pink or orange dubbing. That is the entire modification, and it is enough to have made it one of the most widely fished nymphs in competition and guide circles.

The hot spot works by giving the trout a specific point to focus on. In moving water, a fish has a fraction of a second to locate and intercept a small object, and a concentrated flash of contrasting color makes that easier. The rest of the fly stays sober and imitative, so it does not tip over into looking artificial.

It fishes exactly like a Pheasant Tail but tends to outperform it in faster, deeper, or slightly colored water where visibility is the limiting factor. On clear, slow, heavily pressured water the plain version is often still the better choice — carry both and let the water decide.

What does a Frenchie imitate?

Mayfly nymphs with a bright hot spot.

How do you fish a Frenchie?

Dead drift deep, tight-line or under an indicator. Excellent as the dropper behind a heavier anchor fly.

When should you fish a Frenchie?

Year round. Particularly effective in faster or slightly stained water, and during baetis activity in spring and autumn.

What are the quick tips for fishing it?

  • Pink is the classic hot spot; orange and chartreuse both have their days.
  • Carry a plain Pheasant Tail alongside for clear, pressured water.
  • A jig hook and slotted tungsten bead makes it far more snag-resistant.

How is a Frenchie tied?

  • Hook: jig or standard nymph, #14-#20
  • Bead: slotted tungsten
  • Tail: coq de Leon fibres
  • Body: pheasant tail fibres, wire ribbed
  • Thorax: hot pink or orange dubbing

Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
