Streamer

Balanced Leech

Short answer

The Balanced Leech is a streamer that imitates leeches suspended horizontally in the water column. It is usually tied in sizes 6 to 10. Fish it year round on stillwaters, and especially valuable in cold water when trout will not chase.

Hangs horizontal under indicator; deadly stillwater/leech imitation.

A conventional weighted fly suspended under an indicator hangs nose-down, which looks nothing like a leech. The balanced pattern solves this by mounting a bead on a pin extending forward from the hook eye, moving the center of gravity ahead of the hook so the fly hangs horizontally — exactly the posture a leech holds when it stops swimming.

It matters more than it sounds. Stillwater trout cruising a shoreline see a suspended fly for several seconds before deciding, and posture is one of the few cues available when the fly is not moving. A level leech reads as the real animal; a vertical one reads as a jig.

Fished under an indicator over a drop-off or weed edge, it is one of the most effective stillwater techniques there is, and it works in cold water when trout will not chase a stripped fly. In winter and early spring on a lake it is frequently the difference between fish and no fish.

What does a Balanced Leech imitate?

Leeches suspended horizontally in the water column.

How do you fish a Balanced Leech?

Suspend under an indicator at a measured depth over drop-offs and weed edges. Let wind drift and small twitches provide the movement — do not retrieve steadily.

When should you fish a Balanced Leech?

Year round on stillwaters, and especially valuable in cold water when trout will not chase.

What are the quick tips for fishing it?

  • Black, maroon and olive are the colors that matter.
  • Set the depth so the fly sits just above the weed or bottom.
  • A tiny twitch every twenty seconds is often all the movement needed.

How is a Balanced Leech tied?

  • Hook: jig hook, #8-#12
  • Pin: straight pin extending from the hook eye with a tungsten bead
  • Tail: marabou
  • Body: dubbing or chenille with a wire rib
  • Collar: soft hackle

Dressings vary by tier and region. Treat this as the common recipe, not the only one.
